HPJ Machine Description
HPJ is a customizable line of horizontal point to point machining centers designed for boring, gluing, doweling, and hardware insertion. Custom designs are available, as the HPJ can be outfitted with multiple horizontal and vertical spindles, horizontal dowel inserters, and hardware inserters.
Standard Operation
A part is placed into the work zone referencing the back and side fences. The palm button is pressed, and the clamps secure the part into place. The machining is now ready to begin in the work zone. There are 4 zones on the standard HPJ with manual pop-up side fences. Having these pop-up fences allow you to process parts of unlimited width. Pendulum processing in all four zones is a standard feature. While the one part is being machined, the other zones can be loaded and queued for machining.
The standard HPJ is equipped with a single horizontal drill spindle and a glue/dowel insertion unit that is set up for 8mm diameter dowels.
What the HPJ Does
Standard Pillar Machine line of bore and dowel machines are designed to CNC position the spindle, then CNC position the dowel inserter, inject glue or water (for pre-glued dowels), and insert the dowel into the hole, providing a cycle time of less than 1 second for each bore, glue and dowel insertion when the holes are spaced at 64 mm intervals.
Touchscreen Interface
HPJ machine comes with a 15″ industrial color touchscreen is used to interface between the operator and the machines computer to write and store programs. This touchscreen is mounted on a swivel to allow the operator to move it to an ergonomic location. The 15″ touchscreen monitor makes viewing the specific parameters of a program very easy.
OPERATOR INTERFACE SCREEN
The on-screen graphics of the operator interface have been designed to allow for quick programming at the machine. Typically, programs can be written and recalled in less than one minute. The Interface is open architecture allowing it to integrate with design software that can give hole locations in the form of a .xml file or a bar code (with bar code reader purchase found in options).
Standard Features in the software include:
1. Graphic interface to show where holes are to be drilled and if a dowel is to be inserted.
2. Parametric Programming.
3. Pattern Drilling/Inserting.
4. Password protection of certain features/functions.
5. Online diagnostic capability (if machine is connected to an internet connection).
6. Toggle between Metric or Imperial programing parameters.
HPJ/HP5D MAINTENANCE SCREEN
A Maintenance Screen gives you the ability to manage inputs, outputs and machine offsets.
From this screen you can manually trigger all outputs as well as visually see if the machine is seeing the inputs correctly. You also set the machine parameters that are not as communally used such as fence and spindle offsets from this screen.
Because this screen is password protected you can be selective with who you grant access to it.

Options for the HPJ
Glue pump system adds a diaphragm pump to the glue system. This allows the system to work with glue. The pump has a maximum air pressure of 100 psi, and is a 1:1 pressure ratio.
Note: Glue Pump system will inject glue or water with equal effectiveness. When using glue Pillar recommends using: “Franklin Assembly 161” Glue (or similar but not to exceed 160 centipoise of viscosity); when using water Pillar recommends using “Distilled Water”. Franklin Assembly 161 can be purchased from Pillar Service.
Table extended to 96″
Note: Table option includes 8 clamps in lieu of the 4 clamps
An additional 3 HP Router Rated High Frequency Direct Drive Horizontal Spindle to allow for multiple machine operations to take place without the need for a tool change.
It’s often used for those wanting to use a combination of dowel and confirmat screw construction.
This option replaces the original 3 HP spindle to a 7 HP Router Rated High Frequency Direct Drive Horizontal Spindle. This option is often used for those wanting route pockets or drill large or deep holes.
Package Includes:
(1) 7 HP High Frequency 18,000 RPM Direct Drive Router Spindle
(1) ER32 collet
(1) ER32 cover nut
Please specify what this spindle intended use prior to placing the machine order. This will help us to make sure we are providing the right option as well as the correct collet size.
A Laser Part Width Sensor allows you to insert a part into the work zone, have the width sensor measure part, and automatically run the program. This is especially useful with running stiles that change
in length frequently.
Notes:
This option can be used in two methods
- Standard wood dowel insertion mode:
a. This sensor will work in conjunction with parametric programing. (This is a programing feature that defines the dowel placement based on the parts length. For more information see section Parametric Programing above in the section “What Comes with the HP5D”.) - Rail grooving and stile program modification:
a. For rail grooving you will place a part to be grooved in the work zone and put the machine into “scan mode”. The machine will then scan the length of the part and place a groove along the entire edge of the rail.
b. For stile program modification you will place the stile in the work zone and put the machine into “scan mode”. The machine will then scan the length of the stile and place drill holes in a groove along the edge according to the hole and groove pattern that is preselected based on the program parameters.
When scanning in any of the above-mentioned modes there is an on screen option that will allow you to scan every board placed in the work zones or to scan the first board then apply the length scanned to all the future boards. This saves time in processing multiple boards that are the same length.
Photo may not represent the exact sensor to be used in the machine.
