HP5D Machine Description
Our dowel insertion machine is a customizable line of horizontal point to point machining centers designed for boring, gluing, doweling, and panel grooving.
Pillar’s bore and dowel machines are designed to CNC position the spindle, then CNC position the dowel inserter, inject glue or water (for pre-glued dowels), and insert the dowel into the hole, providing a cycle time of 10 seconds for each bore, glue and dowel insertion when the holes are spaced at 64 mm intervals. Add 15-30 seconds for grooves. Custom designs are available, as the HP5D can be outfitted with multiple horizontal and vertical spindles, horizontal dowel inserters, and hardware inserters.
Standard Operation
Place a part into the work zone referencing the back and side fences. The palm button is pressed, and the clamps secure the part into place. The machining is now ready to begin in the work zone. There are two fixed zones and two pop up zones standard in the base model HP5D allowing for pendulum processing. While the one part is being machined, the other zone(s) can be loaded and queued for machining.
A standard HP5D is equipped with a single horizontal drill and glue/dowel insertion unit that is set up for 8 mm diameter dowels. The HP5D has 4 work zones, standard, with the left and right fences removable for the processing of longer length panels.
In addition to machining Stiles and Rails this machine can be used as a standard dowel machine.
What the HP5D Does
The HP5D is typically used to perform the following operations:
1. Drill and dowel rail ends.
2. Cut panel groove on the inside edge of the rails.
3. Drill for dowel holes and cut panel groove on stiles.
4. Standard horizontal drill and dowel work for cabinet construction.
Touchscreen Interface
A 15″ Industrial Color Touchscreen is used to write and store programs.
The 15″ touch screen monitor makes viewing the specific parameters of a program easy.
OPERATOR INTERFACE SCREEN
The on-screen graphics of the operator interface have been designed to allow for quick programming at the machine. Typically, programs can be written and recalled in less than one minute. The Interface is open architecture allowing it to integrate with design software that can give hole locations in the form of a .xml file or a bar code (with bar code reader purchase found in options).
Standard Features in the software include:
1. Graphic interface to show where holes are to be drilled and if a dowel is to be inserted.
2. Parametric Programming.
3. Pattern Drilling/Inserting.
4. Password protection of certain features/functions.
5. Online diagnostic capability (if machine is connected to an internet connection).
6. Toggle between Metric or Imperial programing parameters.
HPJ/HP5D MAINTENANCE SCREEN
A Maintenance Screen gives you the ability to manage inputs, outputs and machine offsets.
From this screen you can manually trigger all outputs as well as visually see if the machine is seeing the inputs correctly. You also set the machine parameters that are not as communally used such as fence and spindle offsets from this screen.
Because this screen is password protected you can be selective with who you grant access to it.

Options for the HP5D
Glue pump system adds a diaphragm pump to the glue system. This allows the system to work with glue. The pump has a maximum air pressure of 100 psi, and is a 1:1 pressure ratio.
Note: Glue Pump system will inject glue or water with equal effectiveness. When using glue Pillar recommends using: “Franklin Assembly 161” Glue (or similar but not to exceed 160 centipoise of viscosity); when using water Pillar recommends using “Distilled Water”. Franklin Assembly 161 can be purchased from Pillar Service.
An 80″ table option will make the overall table length be 80″ instead of the standard 60″.
Notes:
1. The rail zone can accommodate parts up to 18″ in width.
2. The stile zone with the center fence up would allow stiles up to 60″
3. The stile zone with the center fence down would allow stiles up to 80″
4. Selecting this option will add ~20″ to the overall width of the machine.

HSK 63-F vertical spindle is used for applying the inside panel groove to the long edge of a part, this option includes a 10 HP HSK-63F spindle that is variable speed from 5,000-9,000 RPM. Using HSK technology tools can be quickly changed from one profile to the next when tools are preset on independent arbors. This is accomplished by simply hitting a button, releasing the arbor from the spindle.
Notes:
1. Tool diameter: 3.5″ (custom tool diameters are available, ask your sales engineer for details).
2. The machine is not designed to accept a tool stack. Only one profile tool can be on the spindle at a time.
3. Depth of cut is controlled via manual hand digital hand wheel.
4. HSK tool holder not included.
A Laser Part Width Sensor allows you to insert a part into the work zone, have the width sensor measure part, and automatically run the program. This is especially useful with running stiles that change
in length frequently.
Notes:
This option can be used in two methods
- Standard wood dowel insertion mode:
a. This sensor will work in conjunction with parametric programing. (This is a programing feature that defines the dowel placement based on the parts length. For more information see section Parametric Programing above in the section “What Comes with the HP5D”.) - Rail grooving and stile program modification:
a. For rail grooving you will place a part to be grooved in the work zone and put the machine into “scan mode”. The machine will then scan the length of the part and place a groove along the entire edge of the rail.
b. For stile program modification you will place the stile in the work zone and put the machine into “scan mode”. The machine will then scan the length of the stile and place drill holes in a groove along the edge according to the hole and groove pattern that is preselected based on the program parameters.
When scanning in any of the above-mentioned modes there is an on screen option that will allow you to scan every board placed in the work zones or to scan the first board then apply the length scanned to all the future boards. This saves time in processing multiple boards that are the same length.

An additional Panel Groove Cutting Tool is made of steel and contains scoring inserts for the top and bottom of the cut as well as inside cutters to remove the center of the cut.
Notes:
1. The tool diameter is 3-1/2″
2. Max depth of cut is 9/16″
3. Tool thickness is 1/4″
4. Tool holder is not included in this option.
Keyed Electronic Interlock option gives instant switch access to the rear guarding hinged access doors and acts as an “Emergency Stop”.
Notes:
1. Photo may not represent the exact switch to be used on the machine.
2. Selecting this option may increase your machines lead time.
Fixed mounted Barcode Reader option allows the operator to scan barcodes at the machine as a means of opening a part file. This will open a file that has the exact name in the program folder.
Notes:
1. Barcode reader only opens files that are meant to be read and used on this specific type of machine.
2. Option includes one standalone fixed mounted barcode reader and all required software to use it.
3. Photo may not represent the exact barcode reader to be used in this option.
4. Selecting this option may increase your machines lead time.
Automatic Oiler option adds a compressed air automatic oiler to the frequently used bearings on the machine. The oiler uses oiled compressed air to deliver lubrication to the linear bearings. Because of the nature of this option, the bearings operate under positive pressure making them less susceptible to dust contamination.
Notes:
- The oil injection amount can be adjusted using an adjustment knob on a pneumatic oiler at the machine.
- The oiler will operate anytime the spindle is spinning.
- The bearings that are oiled are:
a. 4 each X-axis linear bearings
b. 4 each under Drill spindle linear bearings
c. 4 each under Groove spindle linear bearings - Photo may not represent the exact oiling device to be used in this option.
- Selecting this option may increase your machines lead time.
